Municipal Works Australia

From website redesign to strategic communications partner.

What started as a website redesign in 2023 has evolved into a trusted partnership that today covers ongoing website management, design of materials for national conferences, institutional brochures, and email campaigns, with complete autonomy.

Trust that grows. Communication that lasts.

ABOUT THE CLIENT

Municipal Works Australia (MWA) is a not-for-profit member-based association established in 1936 to support individuals and organisations operating in the municipal works sector. It represents professionals providing maintenance, engineering, and operational support services for local governments, as well as supplier companies in the sector. MWA is the premier national collaborative platform for the industry, organising conferences, professional development programs, and networking events across the country.

Partnership Timeline: 2023 – Present
My Role: Graphic Designer, Web Developer & Communications Partner
Services: Website development and management, print design, event graphics, email marketing, ongoing technical support

The Challenge

When MWA first contacted me in 2023, they had a problem common to many organisations: a functional WordPress website that no longer reflected the association's relevance and professionalism.

The image problem

For an organisation representing technical professionals and local governments, credibility is everything. The existing site looked dated and didn’t communicate the authority and experience of an institution with nearly 90 years of history. In a competitive sector, this perception could cost opportunities, from partnerships to new members.

The communication complexity

MWA needed to communicate clearly and consistently with different audiences:
  • Individual members (municipal works professionals)
  • Local governments (potential partners)
  • Supplier companies (sponsors and exhibitors)
  • Conference and event attendees
Each of these audiences required a specific approach, but the brand needed to remain cohesive across every touchpoint.

The real problem: lack of a dedicated partner

Until then, MWA worked with different providers for different needs, one for the website, another for print materials, another for events. This created visual inconsistency, required constant re-briefing, and consumed precious internal time.

What they truly needed wasn’t another supplier, but a trusted person who deeply understood their mission, their audiences, and their language, someone who could take care of everything.

The Solution

The approach was simple from the start: build a relationship of trust, project by project.

Phase 1: The Website Redesign

The first step was getting MWA’s digital foundation right.

Information Architecture

I reorganised the site’s content so each audience could quickly find what they were looking for. The national conference, training programs, sponsorship opportunities, and job board were given strategic prominence.

Visual design

I created a clean, professional look with clear typography, generous spacing, and a colour palette that conveys trust and stability, exactly the values MWA wants to project.

WordPress development

I built a site that the MWA team can easily update without compromising visual quality. The backend is intuitive, the frontend always remains polished.

Phase 2: The Partnership Expands

After launch, instead of handing over and disappearing, I stayed present. And trust grew.

Ongoing website management

Today, I handle all updates: new event pages, team profiles, news, technical certifications. The site is always current, an accurate reflection of the organisation at every moment.

Conference materials design

For the MWA National Conference, I developed dedicated web pages, posters, exhibitor programs, and signage materials. All with the same visual identity, creating a cohesive experience for attendees.

Institutional brochures

I created brochures for different membership categories (local governments, supplier companies) and for leadership programs. Each piece reinforces the brand and clearly communicates the benefits of belonging to MWA.

Email marketing

I developed templates for membership renewal campaigns and newsletters, ensuring email communication is a natural extension of the website.

Technical problem-solving

When a critical bug appeared after an Elementor plugin update, I quickly implemented a temporary solution that kept the site running with zero downtime.

The Results

A website that works as hard as the team

The site is no longer a static brochure but an active working tool. It supports member recruitment, sponsor engagement, and communication with event participants.

Brand consistency across all channels

Every new piece, whether a web page, a brochure, or a conference banner, reinforces the same professional identity. No deviations. No surprises.

Operational simplicity

MWA no longer manages multiple providers. They have one person responsible for all visual communication. One brief. One point of contact. One standard of quality.

Autonomy and trust

The relationship has evolved to the point where the team gives me complete autonomy to identify and execute necessary tasks on the site, without prior approval. It’s the greatest sign of trust a client can give.

The Value of a Long-term Partnership

After nearly three years working with MWA, I know the organisation as well as any internal team member. I understand the strategy, the audiences, the business objectives, and the vision for the future. Every new project benefits from this accumulated knowledge. Briefings are shorter. Revisions are minimal. Results are consistent. This is the difference between a one-off project and a partnership that lasts.

Is This the Model Your Business Needs?

  • If you're tired of managing multiple vendors for websites, print materials, and marketing graphics...
  • If you're frustrated by having to re-explain your brand every time you need something designed...
  • If you recognize that consistent, professional communication across all channels should be a strategic asset, not a recurring headache...

Then this partnership approach might be exactly what you need.

I work with established businesses and growing companies that value reliability, consistency, and having a dedicated design partner who actually understands their business.

This isn't about one-off projects. It's about building a long-term relationship where the value compounds over time.

Let's talk about how this could work for your business.
